I have over twenty years of experience in the art of permanent makeup. Since I am one of the first pioneers in this field, there were no training programs explicitly for permanent makeup in 1985. My training consisted of being an apprentice in a tattoo parlor with tattoo artists in the application of "body art". While training I developed techniques to fit the eventual transition to permanent make up. My artistic ability as an amateur portrait artist and professional make up artist were invaluable assets.
WHO I AM
As a young teenager, I was very self-conscious of my sparse, blond eyebrows and eyelashes. I became proficient at applying brow pencil in an artistic manner and loved showing friends how to put theirs on similar to mine; I was a budding make up artist!
In the late 60’s and early 70’s, I was a freelance makeup artist, eventually going to work in an exclusive department store in cosmetic sales as a "line girl." I taught many of my customers how to correctly apply brow pencil to achieve a natural look but the customers often found it frustratingly difficult or impossible to replicate what I had shown them. I joked about tattooing their brows on and we all had a good laugh about it. At the time it seemed like a silly idea!
In the 70’s and 80’s my career progressed into a successful real estate career beginning in residential and then into commercial real estate. In the mid 80’s, commercial real estate plummeted and the "silly idea" became a reality; I learned the art of tattooing. At the time I did not expect it to become my passion and career; it was just a way to have fun on the weekends until the real estate market slump ended. Who would have ever thought that this would become such an amazing industry and it grew at lightning speed!
Since I was one of the original pioneers in permanent make up, I was not paying attention to others that started around the same time. We all made many mistakes along the way and learned this business the hard way.
In the tattoo parlor, I learned to make my own needles (in fact, Sunday’s were spent soldering enough needles together to get me through the week) and mixing powdered pigments with Listerine! Those that are new to this industry have such great advantages over those of us who began more than 20 years ago.
Just one of the techniques you will learn from my mentoring program, this is the single needle brow stroke method.
PREMIER PIGMENTS AND MAKE UP MAGIC
I met Sandi Hammons, owner of Premier Pigments, in 1992 at one of Sandi’s earliest conferences. Sandi was sharing her experiences of trial and error to help others avoid the same pitfalls. Sandi invested many months and a considerable amount of money into the research and development of Premier Pigments. She was so confident that her products were superior to the existing products being manufactured at the time that in 1994 she invited the FDA(!) to her expo!
Sandi Hammons’ "sharing and caring" attitude has inspired me to share my acquired skills with others in this industry.
I look forward to sharing my 24 years of practical experience to those who have a strong desire to become well rounded in this field.
